Biography
Meet Chiharu Shiota, a visionary artist originally from Osaka who now calls Berlin home. Shiota has a unique way of taking deeply personal feelings and turning them into something we can all relate to—exploring the big questions of life, death, and the connections we share as human beings.
She is perhaps best known for her breathtaking, room-sized installations made from thousands of interwoven threads. By wrapping everyday items like shoes, keys, beds, or dresses in these massive webs, Shiota captures the haunting feeling of "presence in the absence"—reminding us of the memories and stories that linger in the objects we leave behind.
Shiota’s work is more than just something to look at; it’s an environment to step into. Whether through her famous thread installations or her evocative sculptures, drawings, and videos, she invites you to wander through a web of stories and discover the invisible threads that tie us all together.
"The red thread represents human connections and relationships"
Did you know?
Chiharu Shiota represents a shift in contemporary art—from object to experience, from explanation to emotion.
Her work answers a question many people are asking today:
How do we reconnect—with ourselves, with others, with memory—in an increasingly fragmented world?
And that’s exactly why she’s not just visible right now—she’s resonating.
