Meet the artist
This lively genre scene transports viewers into the warm, bustling interior of a Roman tavern, where three figures share a table laden with drink. A young man sits between two women, his expression simmering with irritation, while the women exchange knowing, amused glances at his expense. One of them wears the traditional headscarf of a married Roman woman, adding a layer of social context to the interplay. A cat perches nearby, an impassive witness to the unfolding drama.
Bloch painted the scene during his years in Italy, drawing on his direct experience of Roman street life and its colorful characters. In the background, the artist inserted a self-portrait, showing himself seated at a table with friends, back turned to the viewer. The work was commissioned by the Copenhagen merchant Moritz G. Melchior, who also appears in the background. Melchior was Bloch's close friend and patron, and his Thursday dinner parties drew notable guests including Hans Christian Andersen.
The painting owes a clear debt to Wilhelm Marstrand's earlier Italian tavern scenes, but Bloch brings his own psychological sharpness to the composition. The interplay of facial expressions creates a miniature narrative full of tension and humor, capturing a fleeting moment of social friction in a public setting.
