Exhibition Highlights - What you’ll see

The exhibition This Sea Called My Back is a visual journey in which the artist Carla Hayes weaves, in multiple senses, a dialogue between the historical iconography of Western art and the contemporary visual narratives circulating in traditional media and social networks. By evoking the title of the emblematic feminist anthology This Bridge Called My Back, edited by Cherríe Moraga and Gloria Anzaldúa in 1981, the proposal underscores the continuity between the gestures of resistance of racialized women and current processes of artistic creation. From a critical, Afro-diasporic and decolonial perspective, the artist addresses the representation of racialized bodies in the European artistic tradition, not to replicate it, but to challenge and resignify it.

This Sea Called My Back is an exhibition that invites us to look beyond inherited images, to question the frameworks that sustain them, and to recognize the power of emerging aesthetics, in order to intervene in history and propose other forms of memory and representation.
