Exhibition Highlights
Back in 1994, a generous contribution from the Oesterreichische Nationalbank (OeNB)—Austria’s central bank—helped bring the Leopold Museum to life. To celebrate this long-standing friendship, we are delighted to present “Premiere!,” the first-ever comprehensive look at the OeNB’s own impressive art collection.
Since the late 1980s, the OeNB has carefully gathered Austrian paintings and sculptures spanning from 1918 to the present day. This exhibition highlights gems from the years between the World Wars—specifically the “New Objectivity” and post-Expressionist movements—as well as the bold abstract styles that emerged after 1945.
As you explore the galleries, you’ll see a vibrant cross-section of Austrian art history. The show features celebrated names like Rudolf Wacker and Franz Sedlacek alongside the unique, independent perspectives of artists such as Greta Freist and Max Oppenheimer.
“Premiere!” also bridges the gap between generations of contemporary artists. You will discover fascinating connections between modern masters like Maria Lassnig and today’s creators like Tobias Pils, or Svenja Deininger and Ernst Caramelle. From the striking abstract paintings of Martha Jungwirth and Herbert Brandl to the expressive sculptures of Josef Pillhofer and Julia Haugeneder, there is a wealth of creativity waiting to be discovered.
