Thomas Gainsborough
British
Biography
Thomas Gainsborough was born in Sudbury, Suffolk, England, in 1727, and became one of the most celebrated portrait and landscape painters of the eighteenth century. He trained briefly in London before establishing himself in Bath and later in London, where he built a prestigious clientele that included members of the royal family and the British aristocracy. His ability to capture the texture of silk and the freshness of outdoor light set him apart from his contemporaries.\n\nGainsborough's work occupies a fascinating dual identity: his society portraits brought financial security and fame, while his landscapes — often painted for personal pleasure rather than commission — revealed a deeply poetic sensibility. He was a founding member of the Royal Academy but maintained an independent spirit, frequently at odds with the institution's emphasis on history painting. His canvases blend graceful Rococo elegance with an early Romantic feeling for nature that would influence British landscape painting for generations to come.
