Horses rear and twist, swords flash, and two lions snarl and claw at the hunters who surround them in a violent, tightly compressed explosion of bodies. Mounted and dismounted hunters attack from every direction, their turbans and flowing robes suggesting an exotic North African or Middle Eastern setting. The composition spirals outward from the center in a dynamic vortex of interlocked limbs — human, equine, and feline — creating a sense of chaotic energy held together by masterful design.

This monumental canvas marks the culmination of an intensive creative phase in which Rubens explored the hunting theme across a series of large-scale works, including scenes of hippo, boar, wolf, and tiger hunts. The subject allowed Rubens to demonstrate his supreme command of dynamic composition, muscular anatomy, and the rendering of extreme physical exertion and emotional intensity.

The painting draws on a long tradition of hunting scenes in European art, but Rubens transforms the genre through sheer scale and visceral power. Every surface seethes with movement; the viewer is pulled into the fray rather than observing from a safe distance. The canvas hangs in the Alte Pinakothek in Munich, where its enormous dimensions dominate the gallery wall.
