Meet the artist

P
Pak

"The Merge" is a groundbreaking digital artwork created by the anonymous artist Pak, sold on the Nifty Gateway platform from December 2 to 4, 2021. The piece generated approximately $91.8 million in sales across nearly 29,000 collectors, making it the most expensive artwork ever sold by a living artist at the time. Rather than existing as a single static image, The Merge operates as a dynamic, evolving system on the Ethereum blockchain. Buyers purchased units called "mass," represented as white orbs against a black background, and whenever two mass tokens ended up in the same wallet, they automatically merged into a single, larger orb.

Pak conceived The Merge as both a commentary on value, scarcity, and collective ownership and a radical experiment in what art can be in the digital age. No one person owns "The Merge" in its entirety, yet every holder shapes its visual form through the merging mechanism. Over time, as tokens consolidate into fewer wallets, the total number of orbs decreases while individual masses grow, meaning the artwork is slowly converging toward a single enormous sphere. This deflationary design transforms every transaction into an artistic act, blurring the line between creator, collector, and the artwork itself.
