Bentonville, United StatesHUMAN ONE is a groundbreaking kinetic sculpture by digital artist Beeple (Mike Winkelmann), completed in 2021 and first sold at Christie's 21st Century Evening Sale for $28.9 million. The work consists of a seven-foot-tall box constructed from polished aluminum and mahogany wood, housing four outward-facing LED screens that display a continuously animated figure of a lone astronaut walking through an ever-changing digital landscape. The physical structure is paired with generative software that Beeple can update remotely for the lifetime of the piece, making it a perpetually evolving artwork.
The astronaut figure traverses environments that shift between dystopian wastelands, lush forests, surreal cityscapes, and politically charged scenes, reflecting Beeple's characteristic commentary on technology, consumerism, and environmental crisis. The piece was acquired by crypto entrepreneur Ryan Zurrer and later entered the permanent collection of Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Bentonville, Arkansas, where it continues to evolve as Beeple periodically updates its digital environment, ensuring that no two viewings are ever identical.
