teamLab Borderless
Tokyo, Japan"Borderless" is teamLab's landmark museum concept comprising a vast interconnected ecosystem of digital artworks that move freely across rooms, corridors, and open spaces without fixed boundaries. First opened in June 2018 at the MORI Building Digital Art Museum in Odaiba, Tokyo, it became the world's most visited single-artist museum in its first year, drawing over 2.3 million visitors. The museum closed its Odaiba location in August 2022 and reopened in a purpose-built space in the Azabudai Hills complex in central Tokyo in February 2024.
The concept extends beyond a single artwork to define an entire philosophy of exhibition: artworks leave their designated spaces, interact with one another, merge, and are influenced by visitors' physical presence. Flowers bloom and scatter from one room to the next, waterfalls cascade across walls regardless of architectural boundaries, and creatures of light wander freely. The result is a living digital universe where no two visits are alike, and where the traditional museum experience is completely reimagined.
