Avenue of Poplars in Autumn is an early work by Van Gogh from his period in Nuenen, the small Dutch village where he lived with his parents and developed rapidly as a painter. Tall poplars line a country road, their yellow autumn foliage catching dappled sunlight that scatters bright spots across the fallen leaves below. A small cottage is glimpsed at the far end of the path, and the sky filters softly through the canopy of thinning branches.
Van Gogh described the scene enthusiastically in a letter to his brother Theo, noting the interplay of sparkling light and golden leaves. The vertical format emphasizes the height of the trees and the depth of the receding avenue, creating a sense of quiet grandeur from an everyday rural subject. Though painted years before his move to France and the explosion of color that followed, this canvas already reveals Van Gogh's instinct for finding emotional resonance in ordinary landscapes.
