The second version of Van Gogh's portrait of Dr. Paul Gachet, painted in June 1890 at Auvers-sur-Oise during the artist's final months. Gachet rests his head on his hand in deep melancholy, with foxglove as a medical attribute.

Differs from the first version in color and brushwork. Van Gogh sought to capture "the desolate expression of our time."

Bequeathed to France by Gachet's heirs, now at the Musée d'Orsay. Unlike the first version ($82.5M sale in 1990, whereabouts uncertain), this one remains publicly accessible.
