Meet the artist

"Girl with Balloon" is one of the most instantly recognizable works of contemporary street art. Originally stenciled by the anonymous artist Banksy on a wall near Waterloo Bridge on London's South Bank around 2002, the image depicts a young girl reaching toward a red heart-shaped balloon carried away by the wind. The piece became a cultural touchstone, reproduced in countless formats from signed screen prints to unauthorized merchandise, and was voted the United Kingdom's most loved artwork in a 2017 Samsung poll. Its deceptive simplicity belies a layered commentary on innocence, hope, and loss.
The work gained worldwide notoriety in October 2018 when a framed canvas version partially self-destructed through a hidden shredder moments after selling at Sotheby's for £1.04 million. Banksy subsequently renamed the half-shredded piece "Love is in the Bin," transforming it into an entirely new artwork that interrogated the commodification of art. It resold at Sotheby's in October 2021 for £18.6 million, nearly twenty times the original price, and was acquired by the Staatsgalerie Stuttgart where it is now on permanent display. The episode cemented the image's status not merely as street art but as a pivotal moment in the ongoing dialogue between art, commerce, and spectacle.
