Exhibition Highlights

The Musée Jacquemart-André will pay tribute to the Roman artist Artemisia Gentileschi (1593 – c. 1656), one of the few female painters of her time to gain international recognition and sustain a career through her art. A master of the Caravaggesque style, she led an extraordinary life, defying the conventions of her era.

Bringing together around forty works—including her most celebrated masterpieces, recently attributed paintings, and rarely exhibited pieces—this exhibition highlights Gentileschi’s significant impact on 17th-century art. It explores the originality of her work, career, and identity, which continue to inspire and captivate audiences today. Artemisia’s story transcends time, offering a universal reflection on resilience and personal expression.
Artemisia Gentileschi (1593 – c. 1656) was a pioneering Italian Baroque painter and one of the few female artists of her time to achieve widespread recognition.
Influenced by Caravaggio, her work is known for its dramatic use of light, bold compositions, and powerful depictions of women, often drawn from mythological and biblical narratives. Despite facing personal and societal challenges, she built a successful career across Italy and beyond, working for prestigious patrons, including the Medici and the English court of Charles I.

Today, she is celebrated as a trailblazer in art history and a symbol of resilience and artistic excellence.
