Martin Schongauer: The Beautiful Immortal
Discover the life and work of Martin Schongauer, one of the most beloved artists of the late Middle Ages. Born in Colmar around 1445 and later passing away in Alt-Breisach in 1491, Schongauer led a busy painting workshop, yet he was most famous—even back then—for his incredible skill in engraving. Though he didn’t follow his father and brothers into the goldsmith trade, he likely learned to handle delicate tools in the family workshop, eventually mastering the art of engraving with unmatched precision.
This exhibition invites you to explore a wide range of his drawings and prints. For the first time, we are also bringing together nearly all of his surviving paintings, including the 1473 Madonna of the Rose Bower—the only panel painting we know the exact date for. Schongauer’s work shows us a thoughtful artist with a gift for imaginative storytelling and a wonderfully keen eye for the beauty of nature.
