Casa Batlló
Barcelona, SpainLiving Architecture: Casa Batlló is a pioneering AI-driven projection mapping work by Refik Anadol, unveiled on the facade of Antoni Gaudí's UNESCO World Heritage landmark in Barcelona on May 7, 2022. Drawing on approximately one billion images — encompassing Gaudí's original sketches, archival photographs, and publicly sourced images — Anadol's ML algorithms transformed the data into undulating, dreamlike visuals that rippled across the organic curves of Casa Batlló's celebrated facade. Environmental sensors fed real-time climate data into the system.
The twelve-minute projection was witnessed by nearly 50,000 spectators and subsequently minted as a dynamic NFT, auctioned at Christie's for $1.38 million with all proceeds donated to autism and neurodivergence foundations. The work represents a landmark convergence of artificial intelligence, architectural heritage, and public art, demonstrating how data-driven creativity can breathe new life into historical structures.
