About the Artwork
"Glacier Dreams" is an immersive installation by Refik Anadol that addresses the climate crisis through environmental data and artificial intelligence. Presented at the Serpentine North Gallery in London in 2023, the work draws on multisensory data from endangered glacial environments, including satellite imagery, ocean temperature readings, wind patterns, and underwater acoustic recordings. These data streams were processed through custom ML algorithms to generate a continuously evolving data sculpture that visualizes the fragile beauty of Earth's cryosphere in forms shifting between crystalline structures, flowing water, and ethereal atmospheric phenomena.
The installation represents a significant thematic expansion for Anadol, moving beyond pure aesthetic exploration toward environmental advocacy. By making visible the data that documents glacial retreat, "Glacier Dreams" transforms abstract climate statistics into visceral, emotionally resonant visual experiences. The work invites viewers to confront environmental loss through immersive beauty rather than charts, creating what Anadol describes as a "collective memory" of landscapes that may soon cease to exist.
