One of the finest examples of Analytical Cubism, depicting the art dealer Ambroise Vollard through fragmented geometric planes. Vollard's large bald head is subtly highlighted with gold amid brown and ochre tones.

Vollard organized Picasso's first exhibition in 1901 when Picasso was nineteen. Picasso declared: "My cubist portrait of him is the best one of all."

Vollard sold it to Russian collector Ivan Morozov in 1913. Now at the Pushkin Museum in Moscow, a defining monument of the Cubist revolution in portraiture.
