Exhibition Highlights
Enjoy this eighth solo exhibition celebrating the visionary Carlos Cruz-Diez. A world-renowned leader in kinetic and optical art, Cruz-Diez spent much of his life in Paris rethinking how we see the world. For him, color wasn’t just a static part of an object; it was a living, breathing reality that changes with every step you take and every shift in the light.
The show, The Unstable Plane, features a special selection of square-format works that highlight his lifelong passion. Starting in 1959, he dedicated himself to showing the "autonomy of color"—the idea that color doesn't need to be tied down to a specific shape to be powerful.
Cruz-Diez completely changed the rules of painting. Instead of just seeing color as material on a flat surface, he set it free into the air around us. He described his art as a "situation" or an event—something that is always in flux and only truly comes to life when you are there to experience it. As you move through the space, the colors move with you.
You may have already encountered his work in your travels, as his vibrant interventions have transformed everything from major museums to busy airports and city streets. His legacy continues to inspire us today, turning the simple act of looking into an immersive, hands-on experience of discovery.
