Exhibition Highlights
Discover the remarkable journey of Henri Rousseau (1844–1910), an artist who proved it is never too late to follow your dreams. At age 49, Rousseau moved from his hometown of Laval to Paris, retiring from his job as a customs officer to devote himself entirely to his passion for painting. While he is famously known by his nickname ‘Le Douanier’ (the toll collector), this exhibition looks past the myths to explore how he truly built his career and navigated the bustling Parisian art scene.
Through a vibrant range of works, you will see how Rousseau made his mark—from the bold compositions he sent to the Salon des Indépendants and grand government commissions to personal portraits of friends and the landscapes he created for the market. We also dive into his professional world, looking at how his work was shaped by the modern art market and key collectors like Paul Guillaume and Albert Barnes.
This special event brings together the world’s two largest collections of Rousseau’s work, alongside masterpieces from around the globe. Thanks to groundbreaking scientific research from the Barnes Foundation, you will get a fresh look at the artist’s unique techniques, revealing the physical craft and care behind his iconic style.
