Exhibition Highlights - What you’ll see

Inside and outside the Frame

Join us as we explore the work of Irma Álvarez-Laviada (Gijón, 1978) in this exhibition featuring over thirty pieces created during the last decade. Displayed alongside paintings from the museum's own collection, these works occupy a unique middle ground—sitting both inside and outside the traditional frame. By using everyday industrial materials, Álvarez-Laviada encourages us to rethink what belongs in a gallery, bridging the gap between pure artistic beauty and the practical worlds of business and history.

The artist also brings a fresh perspective to abstract art by looking at it through the lens of gender. She plays with classic opposites—like hard and soft, or full and empty—to challenge old-fashioned stereotypes about what is considered "masculine" or "feminine" in art. Through a creative process of repetition and subtle changes, she gently takes apart traditional styles to build something new, inviting us all to see the history of Western art in a more inclusive way.
