Exhibition Highlights
Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza presents a unique journey into the world of Vilhelm Hammershøi (1864-1916). This is the first major retrospective of the Danish artist’s work in Spain, featuring around a hundred pieces that offer a full look at his remarkable career.
Hammershøi was celebrated in his own time for his quiet, "cool" interior scenes—spaces that feel both peaceful and a little bit mysterious. Even today, over a century after his death, his paintings still pull us in, sparking new conversations about how his unique style connects with other great European and Danish artists of his era.
The exhibition’s subtitle, ‘The eye that listens,’ hints at the special connection between Hammershøi’s art and the world of music. As you walk through the gallery, you’ll experience the deep silence and calm that define his work, inviting you to see—and even feel—his paintings in a whole new way.
